My name is Micaela Baranello and I am assistant professor of musicology at Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance in Philadelphia, PA. My book, The Operetta Empire, is a study of twentieth-century Viennese operetta and the Austro-Hungarian Empire and was published by the University of California Press in 2021 and will be released in paperback in April 2024. As a music critic and journalist, I have written for The New York Times and Financial Times. My musicological work has appeared in the Journal of the American Musicological Society, Opera Quarterly, Cambridge Opera Journal, and the new Cambridge Companion to Operetta. I am also currently reviews editor of Opera Quarterly. I hold a PhD in musicology from Princeton, where I received a Mellon-ACLS Fellowship.
