
My name is Micaela Baranello and I am assistant professor of music at the University of Arkansas. My book, The Operetta Empire, is a study of twentieth-century Viennese operetta and the Austro-Hungarian Empire and was published by the University of California Press in 2021. As a music critic and journalist, I have written for The New York Times and Financial Times. My musicological work has appeared in the Journal of the American Musicological Society, Opera Quarterly, Cambridge Opera Journal, and the new Cambridge Companion to Operetta. I am also currently reviews editor of Opera Quarterly. I hold a PhD in musicology from Princeton, where I received a Mellon-ACLS Fellowship. I’m also Director of Marketing for Opera Fayetteville, a company specializing in new opera.
